Research Grants

The American Thyroid Association ( ATA®) is committed to advancing the field of thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment through robust research funding. To support this mission, the ATA established the Thyroid Research Grant Program in 1996. This program plays a pivotal role in funding cutting-edge research in thyroid disease and thyroid cancer and supporting early career investigators propel their research. The ATA® also oversees the awarding of grant research funds provided by ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., Bite Me Cancer, and the Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer (THANC) Foundation.

Through the generous support of the grant funders, including ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., Bite Me Cancer, Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer (THANC) Foundation, American Thyroid Association (ATA®), as well as contributions from our donors, we have been able to distribute over $5 million in research grants to over 200 researchers to date.

One notable partner, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., has been a major contributor since 2003. ThyCa is dedicated to supporting thyroid cancer research and prioritizes funding at least one follicular cell thyroid cancer project and one medullary thyroid cancer project a year. Their mission is to educate and empower the global thyroid cancer community while funding research efforts aimed at eradicating the disease.

Another key partner, Bite Me Cancer, is dedicated to supporting teenagers affected by all types of cancer. Founded by a young thyroid cancer survivor, Nikki Ferraro, Bite Me Cancer works to raise awareness about thyroid cancer and advocates for enhanced research, highlighting the need for improved treatment options.

The collective efforts and contributions of our organizations have significantly advanced thyroid disease and thyroid cancer research, bringing us closer to breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, Optimal Thyroid Health for All.
