Dear Women in Thyroidology Colleagues,
It is the time again for Women in Thyroidology (WIT) to reconnect with old friends and to meet new ones at the upcoming 89th Annual meeting of the ATA to be held in Chicago, IL at the Sheraton Grand Chicago, Oct 30 – Nov 3, 2019. WIT is happy to report the Clark T. Sawin Historical Symposium on October 31 at 4:15pm will focus on women who have made significant contributions to thyroidology. The Symposium will be moderated and introduced by Rebecca Bahn. Please attend and prepare to be inspired and wowed!
Since Drs. Carole Spencer and Virginia Sarapura launched WIT in 2002, we have been engaged in networking, mentorship, and advocacy for women with the ultimate goal to empower every WIT member to achieve her personal and professional fulfillment. Similar to last year, WIT networking reception will be combined with the ATA Opening Welcome Reception, look for the WIT signs and tables on October 30, 6:45-7:30 pm. We invite all of you to join us and take an active role in our current activities and shaping the future of WIT. Please stop-by!
The 17th WIT Program and Business Meeting will be held on October 31, 7-8 am. In addition to honoring our WIT Woman of the Year, our distinguished colleagues, Dr. Julie Ann Sosa (Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco) and Dr. Anthony Hollenberg (Chairman of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine) will share their experiences and insights on "Promotion and Leadership Development" followed by questions and discussions. We will soon post "Tips for Promotion" prepared by our taskforce member, Dr. Aime Franco, on WIT Facebook group to initiate discussions and sharing resources. Furthermore, it was with great joy to read the article entitled "Where Are the Women? The Underrepresentation of Women Physicians Among Recognition Award Recipients from Medical Specialty Societies" co-authored by our distinguished colleague Dr. Sareh Parangi recently listed as recommended reading by Women in Medicine and Science at The Ohio State University.

WIT Woman of the Year award was established in 2012 to recognize outstanding woman who has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to the ATA and the advancement of women in thyroidology both within the organization and in the field. This year, we are proud to announce the 8th WIT Woman of the Year: Dr. Susan Mandel. Dr. Mandel is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where she also directs the fellowship program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She serves as the Associate Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is the Director of the Thyroid Nodule Clinic. Since joined ATA in 1991, Dr. Mandel has served on various committees, co-Chaired 2009 Annual Meeting, and contributed to various Guidelines and Workshops. She also served leadership roles in other related Societies, such as President of the Endocrine Society in 2018-19. Dr. Mandel has won prestigious awards that include the 2011 Endocrine Society's laureate Distinguished Educator Award, the 2012 AACE H. Jack Baskin Educator, and the George Murray Lectureship Award from the British Thyroid Association…. (Read Full Bio)
In addition to the WIT Woman of the Year Award, we are excited to be presenting a new ATA award, supported by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers - Women Advancing Thyroid Research (WATR). This award celebrates the work of four young women who are leading outstanding thyroid research: Drs. Mariella Tutter, Cristiane Gomes-Lima, Silvia Ippolito, and Rosa Falcone. Their achievements will be recognized during the WIT Program.
As my term comes to an end, I would like to congratulate and welome our incoming President, Dr. Megan Haymart, and incoming President-elect, Dr. M. Regina Castro.
Megan R. Haymart, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan with a primary appointment in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Diabetes and a secondary appointment in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. She has been a member of ATA since 2007. Dr. Haymart received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2002, completed fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Wisconsin in 2007. Dr. Haymart is involved in creating the National Comprehensive Cancer Network thyroid carcinoma guidelines, is on the Board of Directors for the American Thyroid Association, serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and is an Associate Editor for Thyroid®. Her current research focuses on variation in the management of thyroid cancer with an emphasis on the role of patients, providers, and health systems in thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. M. Regina Castro is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic Medical School, and consultant in the Division of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic, where she has served as Associate Program Director of Endocrinology Fellowship Program and Director of Internal Medicine Residency Rotation in Endocrinology. She joined ATA in 1998 and has served ATA in many capacities, including Trainees and career advancement committee, Editorial Board of Clinical Thyroidology for the public, Board Liason to the Clinical Affairs committee, ATA awards committee, Board of Directors, Chair of the Patient Education and Affairs committee. Her research interests are in the areas of thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and novel non-surgical therapies for benign thyroid nodules. Over her career she has mentored many Endocrinology Fellows, mostly young women, the majority of whom have moved on to pursue very successful careers in Academic endocrinology. (Read Full Bio)
In closing, it has been a privilege to work with the past WIT President, Dr. Whitney Goldner, the incoming WIT President Dr. Megan Haymart, and the brilliant WIT taskforce team. WIT truly appreciates the continuous support from ATA leadership and our superb ATA staffs: Carrie Prewitt and Sharleene Cano. Without ATA support, WIT would not be what it is today.

Women in Thyroidology (WIT) elects a Woman of the Year who is announced during the Women in Thyroidology yearly gathering held at the Annual Meeting of the ATA.
The Woman of the Year is selected based on her long-standing commitment to the ATA and to the advancement of women both within the organization and in the thyroid field. The nominees need not have been recognized for their academic or clinical contributions.
