PRESIDENT'S UPDATE

President's Update
Hossein Gharib, M.D.
ATA President

Dear ATA friends,

This is my last official message to you as president since my term wraps up next month during the 84th Annual Meeting of the ATA. As years often do, this one went by faster than expected and as we near its closing, I want to express how honored I have been for having served as your president.

In July, Dr. E. Chester (Chip) Ridgway passed away. His death was saddening and his departure premature. Chip was a Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes, the Executive Vice Chair in the Department of Medicine, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and the recent recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award. Chip was the past President of the ATA (1997), the past President of the Endocrine Society (2004), and an international authority on thyroid disorders. He was a gifted teacher, an innovative researcher, a good friend, and a distinguished colleague. He will be missed and should be remembered for his significant accomplishments and major contributions to medicine.

University of Chicago Survey

The University of Chicago is conducting a multicenter, prospective study on quality of life in thyroid cancer survivors called the North American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study. In addition to understanding quality of life issues from the patient's perspective, we are interested in understanding the physician's perspective on how the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer affects quality of life in thyroid cancer patients. The survey is very brief and your participation will be greatly appreciated.

Poster contest

The American Thyroid Association (ATA) Trainees and Career Advancement committee is requesting volunteers to judge posters at 84th Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association in Coronado, California from October 29 - November 2, 2014! Please help nurture and engage our early career members by participating as a poster reviewer! Your interaction with the presenters and poster review feedback will encourage and contribute to their career development. The posters will be evaluated for scientific merit and presentation. E. Chester Ridgway Trainee Conference

The ATA was honored when E. Chester 'Chip' Ridgway, MD, founder of the Endocrine Fellows Conference (EFC), was part of the endeavor to combine his program with the ATA Trainees Track creating a seamless 4 1/2 day experience for clinical, basic, surgical trainees throughout the ATA annual meeting. The ATA expresses tremendous gratitude to our late President Dr. E. Chester 'Chip' Ridgway for founding the EFC more than 20 years ago. In his memory, the ATA has created a named fund to support the "E. Chester Ridgway Trainee Conference" in the years to come. The newly named trainee conference will offer clinical, surgical and basic trainees a comprehensive educational experience specifically designed to enhance their knowledge of thyroid disease during the 84th Annual Meeting of the ATA. Congratulations to the 135 grant recipients who have received support to attend the 84th Annual Meeting of the ATA and inaugural E. Chester Ridgway Trainee Conference.
