AMERICAN THYROID ASSOCIATION HONORS FURIO PACINI, M.D., WITH 2008 PAUL STARR AWARD October 3, 2008 — The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is proud to honor Furio Pacini, M.D., of the University of Siena in Siena, Italy, with the 2008 Paul Starr Award for his outstanding contributions to clinical thyroidology. Dr. Pacini presented his lecture, “New Insights in Familial Non-Medullary Thyroid Cancer,” today at the ATA’s 79th Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill., where he also received this prestigious award. The Paul Starr Award is supported by ATA Member Boris Catz, MD. Dr. Furio Pacini is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Chairman of the Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Siena in Siena, Italy. He received his degree in medicine from the University of Pisa with a specialty in endocrinology. He completed his-post-doctoral fellowship in thyroid research at the University of Chicago. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Pacini has contributed to the implementation of novel diagnostic and treatment protocols for the management of differentiated anaplastic and medullary thyroid cancer. His research interests include the study of serum thyroglobulin and calcitonin as tumor markers, the use of recombinant human TSH in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer, and the assessment of clinical and molecular aspects of thyroid cancer, including post-Chernobyl radiation-induced thyroid cancer. Dr. Pacini has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He was Associate Editor of Thyroid and Senior Editor of Endocrine-Related Cancer. He has received many awards, including the “William Lees Lecture” at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., the “Martin Sonenberg Visiting Professor and Light of Life Foundation Award” at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, N.Y., and, most recently, the ETA Merck Prize.
