Robert Utiger Honored with American Thyroid Association’s 2007 Distinguished Service Award October 6, 2007— Robert D. Utiger, M.D., of Boston, Mass., is the recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s (ATA) 2007 Distinguished Service Award, which honors important and continuing contributions to the organization. The award was presented today at the ATA’s 78th Annual Meeting in New York City. As a member of the ATA since 1966, Dr. Utiger has served as chair and member of the Program and Awards Committees, as well as member of the Education and Publication Committees. He has been editor of Clinical Thyroidology since 2001. Currently, Dr. Utiger is clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and senior physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He received his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 1957 and his postgraduate training in internal medicine and endocrinology at the Washington University Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health. As an investigator, Dr. Utiger developed radioimmunoassays for thyrotropin, triiodothyronine, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone, and used these assays to develop new information about the physiology and pathophysiology of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. He has edited several other journals, published over 100 scientific papers, and nearly as many editorials and book chapters. Dr. Utiger has also held prominent positions in several organization boards and committees. He was honored with the ATA’s 1972 Van Meter Award, the 2006 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Service Award of the Endocrine Society and was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians in 1997.
