ATA News Alert: Shortage of I-131 may continue through April 2007
(April 19, 2007)
MDS Nordion, the major supplier of I-131 for medical use, has encountered mechanical problems with its reactor. As a result, production of I-131 has been temporarily interrupted and there is currently a widespread shortage. Nordion expects to complete repairs on the reactor this weekend and to be back into full production by next Wednesday, April 25th. In the meantime, the company is taking measures to the extent possible to ensure the supply of I-131 to universities, smaller pharmacies, and physicians whose patients are in critical need of treatment.
