WHO: American Thyroid Association (ATA), in cooperation with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE)

WHAT: Thyroid Health and the Environment: Threats and Effects

WHY:  The ATA will bring together experts and specialists — from the United States and around the world — to share the latest information on the effects of the environment on the thyroid, especially those factors that might adversely affect thyroid function.
Issues to be discussed include –

  1. How environmental chemicals and radiation affect the thyroid and iodine nutrition, which is especially important in pregnant women and nursing infants;
  2. The role of radiation in developing autoimmune thyroid disease;
  3. The effects of environmental perchlorate on thyroid function;
  4. The effect of thiocyanate, a byproduct of smoking, on the concentration of iodine in the thyroid and in breast milk; and
  5. The effects of the environmental contaminants nitrates and PCBs.
