Ernest Mazzaferri, MD, Takes Office as President of the American Thyroid Association
(FALLS CHURCH, VA)—Ernest L. Mazzaferri, MD, of Gainesville, Fla., is the new president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA), the leading professional society of physicians and researchers who specialize in diseases of the thyroid gland. He took office on Nov. 2, 2005, at the ATA Membership Meeting during the 13th International Thyroid Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He will serve a one-year term.
“Nearly 29 years ago when I attended my first annual meeting of the American Thyroid Association, I never dreamed that I would have the honor and privilege of serving as your president,” said Dr. Mazzaferri. “During 2006, you will see the growth and fruition of important new initiatives.”
Dr. Mazzaferri is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He is a past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Subspecialty Board on Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and recently completed a four-year term on the ABIM Board of Directors.
He received his medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine. He served as the Chair of Medicine at the University of Nevada from 1978–1984 and as Acting Dean from 1979 to 1981. Dr. Mazzaferri also served as Professor of Medicine and Physiology and Chair of Medicine at The Ohio State University from 1984–1999. His research interests include the clinical management of thyroid disease, especially thyroid cancer.
Dr. Mazzaferri has been a member of the ATA for 25 years and has served as a member and chair of both the Awards Committee and the Development Committee and as a member of the Public Health Committee. He is the recipient of the ATA’s Paul Starr Award, The Robert Graves’ Award, and the Light of Life Award. He also received the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American College of Endocrinology and was named the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished Educator Award by the Endocrine Society.
